Anyone else super surprised she scratched the 1500m. She ran huge 4:02 PR in the Rome diamond league a while back only finishing 1 sec. behind Jenny Simpson. She will opt for the 5k instead, although she did run a huge 15:08 pr without any major competition at the Adrian Martinez classic . imo I think she can make the 1500 team, Thoughts?

I'm not so sure it will be that much easier to make. Schweizer, Hall, Conley, Schneider, Fraser, Rowbury, D'Agastino (now Cooper) all have faster PBs than Purrier. If the race turns tactical she does have slighter edge on the field however the other runners are very strength-based and not sit and kick runners so it is very unlikely the race will be slow. Additionally, if in the rare case either Simpson or Houlihan does not make the 1500 team the 5k then the event becomes even more competitive,
Disappointing. I find her 4:02 much more impressive than 15:08. The 1500m is more of a crapshoot at world's, a strong 1500m runner who keeps their head can place well in a final. If you aren't sub 15 you are gonna struggle to make the 5000m final and unless you're sub 14:45 you realistically are just gonna get dropped like a rock in the final.
She def had the ability to make it in the 15 too.
The goal is to make a team. That 15:08 was a walk away from a modest pace. She dusted the field including D'Agastino. If you watched it, she's in sub 15 shape.
The 5K team will be Schweizer, and probably Schneider, and Purrier should be right in there. Dag, Conley, Rowbury, Hall have all run faster but in the past year?
1500 with Houlihan and Simpson will be harder to make and there's a lot more left to chance/tactics in a final.
This is a good move and it's surprising to see people bellyaching about it.

Totally agree. Add Hiltz, Johnson as deadly in the 1500 right now, and Alexa and Dani running well also. Purrier has all the toolkit to handle whatever happens in the 5K.

OTOH if one runs ca. 15:00 one is almost guaranteed to make the WC 5k final, especially as a 1500/5k type with a decent finish whereas sub 4 runners have been left in the semis in the 1500m (e.g. Tsegay, Chebet and Klosterhalfen in 2017).

Yes the other 1500 runners have been running well but not nearly as well as Purrier! She has way more potential, both domestically and globally in the 1500 than in the 5k. If you look at 2020 olympics why not shoot for the 1500 team and gain valuable championship experience. She has more experience in the 1500 her PR is ranked third in the field and her fitness is riding on a high right now. She is mostly likely to make the 1500 team after Houlihan and Simpson. 1500 is competitive but not that deadly. And if she doesn't make the team in the 1500 she can them run the 5k and still have a good shot at making the team. Imo, if you think long term, purrier running the 1500 is a much smarter idea. I do not see her at all contesting with the worlds best at 5k, in the 1500 much more better shot! She should have declared to run both and used the 5k as a backup/safety net rather than a primary.

In the 5000 she is co-favorite with her old rival Schweizer; in the 1500....no.
I can envision a lot more scenarios where Purrier doesn't finish top 3 in the 1500 than I can where she doesn't finish top 3 in the 5000. Opps, I forgot that DL went to "winner take all" in the final at some point. With only three spots, all the more reason for Elle to go with the 5K. I look forward to her against Karissa.
Tend to agree with what people have said. I think the 5k is a touch harder to make than the 15. She would have had the 2nd fastest time going into that race. I think a lot more can go wrong in 1500 heats where maybe the fastest runners don't always emerge. In the 5k there seems to be a drop off after the top-6 (she's seeded 6th). But then there are a ton of wild cards -- Bruce, Taylor, Cooper, Rowbury, Simpson.
The women's schedule is better than the men's. She could have gone all in on the 15 and then decided on the 5 since it's the day after the 15 final. For the men the 5k is an hour before the 1500 final.
I think she's a threat to make the team but the 1500 may have been the better option. Want to see her do well. Always liked that she ran at UNH. Not exactly a blue blood.
She's racing the 5000m because Purrier has ZERO kick. She lost 3 NCAA titles in the last 150m. She just doesn't have a world-class kick or speed. Plain and simple.

Take away Rome, and she'd have the 15th fastest qualifying time, 4:07.79.
Since Rome, she's run one 1500. She came second to Shannon Osika, who beat her by over a second. Purrier ran 4:09.71.
Should she shift to the marathon sooner rather than later?
Well, she should definitely stay on the track until 2024 Olympics. Let's see how 2019 and 2020 go.. does she get down to 14:40-14:50? Or does she stay around 15:00? Does she attempt the steeple again and go 9:20? Maybe experiment with the Half Marathon at the next WC for Half Marathon in 2022, and then target 2028 Olympic Marathon if she is a marathoner in mindset and physiology.
I thought I heard an interview where Houlihan mentioned she was planning to run the 1500 and 5000, which would make Purrier’s chance in the 5000 that much harder. Schweizer and Schneider both might have the edge over Purrier. I’d name Kate Grace as the favorite to snag the 3rd spot in the 1500. Ran a 4:02 at Pre and a 1:58 last week, she’s looking fit and more adapted to Jerry’s training this year.
