i do 60 minute sessions and start out at
incline = 10 (out of 20)
resistance = 12 (out of 20)
warmp up about 10 minutes, then i gradually build up to about
incline = 15-16
resistance = 16-18
and just for fun, i'll go up to 20 and 20 for a minute or two
the key is simulating running motion, and not using the railings.
i move FORWARD for 2.5 minutes--standing only on the balls of my feet to work the calves more, then backwards--flat footed, to work the quads more.
second to the nordic trac, the ET is the best cross training machine out there!
clarification. that's 2.5 minutes forward, then 2.5 minutes backwards. until i reach 60 minutes.

I use the Precor EFX 456. (each one could be different)
When I get on I push "Quick Start" and then set the resistence to 11 for a warm up. I dont touch anything else. This mode will set my workout to 60 minutes. After I am warmed up I increase the resistence to 12 and 13, if I am feeling strong.
I also swing my arms, as if I was running and DO NOT hold the rails. In addition, I hold 12oz fishing weights in each hand to add to the workout. I keep my strides per minute between 168-175. After an hour of this you will be thrashed.
Thanks for the info. I'm coming back from a femoral stress fracture and been using the eliptical trainer alot.
What incline do you put it on? I keep it on 4-6 b/c it shows I'm working all the muscles but it seems as if everyone else goes for the steeper levels 19-20
