Is it possible for somebody like me who started out at age 37 after being an obese smoker most of his life to build the speed necessary to do this? I have always been slow.
When I first started running I couldn’t even run 200m at 6:00/mile pace which is 45 seconds, getting into a bit better condition over the next 2 years I was able to build up to a 37.5. I then wanted to build upon this speed and started doing explosive work, top speed runs of 30m to 50m and speed endurance runs 80m to 150m and over the next 2 years I was able to get this down to a 33.0 200m (standing start).
I have been a runner for 8 years. Essentially, I spent four years building my 200m speed from 50s+ to 33.0s and then over the next four years I decided to call it quits with sprint training because I was ridiculously slow and it just felt like I was peeing in the wind trying to get faster and I was getting frustrated so I started running local 5k and 10k races which seem to have been more successful for me, I win age group awards sometimes. I have build from less than 5 mpw to averaging 40 miles each week but I still do speed work (intervals) to maintain my 33 second 200m speed as I know I am at the age now (mid 40s) where speed starts to go FAST.
Some recent road race results on 40 mpw + intervals:
5k: 20:58
10k: 44:07
I also did a 1600m time trial on the track about a month ago and ran a 5:52. With enough training, can I ever hope to see sub 5?
