I've run off and on since 1998 (HS), but really started getting back into it in 2017. Only ran 25-30 mpw the first few years. Did three halves: 1:45 in heat, 1:39 in great conditions (despite having to pee at Mile 1 and costing me time) and 1:42 without trying this past spring. Ran a 21:xx 5k at moderate effort to see where I was recently but didn't go all out, and still placed fairly high.
I want to BQ, but I'm not sure how many years it will take.
Dropped from 156 to 134 lbs. since 3/9 (3 months). I'm up to 46 mpw and climbing and feeling steady. No super speedwork, but tempo runs, easy runs and long runs.
My goal is 3:20 for this first 'thon in the fall (a flat, fast one) and I'd love to BQ on my first attempt, but it may take years. I'm 35 and I know the M35-39 standard is now 3:05 and it used to be 3:10. So really 3 flat if you are realistic.
I'm working with a great coach on a mileage plan but I've never used a coach before. He's good so far. Before, in '17 and '18, I had to wing it alone and never ran more than 38 mpw for the '18 half and, despite that, still broke 1:40 on really low 25-30 avg. mpw. I would just run what I felt, and throw in a few 10s and 11s. I ran 13 today in 90'F heat and did it slow and easy, 1:50:25, in Antrim Park in Cbus.
Do I really need to get up to 70-80 mpw to have a chance?
