The reason is because to do a proper 800 workout your legs need to be springy. It's possible to run high mileage and have fresh legs for workouts but you need to do your easy runs as "true jogs" (7:30 min/mile or slower). To train optimally for 10k you should be running your easy runs fast enough to put some stress on your system, which means your legs will always be a little tired, which is ok since it is possible to grind through distance workout days on tired legs.

That's subjective. The Purdy scale actually says his 10k is better. Regardless he ran damn fast at both.

He did that in 1986, according to his IAAF profile he did not run a 800m that season, but he did run a 3:50 mile, so he could've ran a 144-146 800m time that season. That 10000 that season was on July 5th and his mile best that season was on Aug 15th. So about 6 weeks apart.

You responded to me. You state I am wrong but you show no evidence the Aouta trained for 800m & 10000m at the same time. Training for 1500m & 5000m simultaneously and then racing 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m 10000m is not training for 800m & 10000m at the same time.

But you can get into good shape for both.
