Question: College Coaches

Call coach by first name always. That's the way it is.

I've only ever heard young assistant coaches go by their first name. If you're the head or my direct coach, I either use your last name, or more often, Coach "Last Name." Respect the business, folks.

When I was an athlete in college, pretty much all of our track coaches were called by first name. It was incredibly common to where it was super weird to call any of them Coach. Administrators were also called by first name.

Now as a younger coach at a different college, I see it both ways. It is crazy for anyone to call our head coach by anything other than Coach lastname. For other coaches, some go by coach lastname or maybe a nickname that is a pun of the last name. It depends more on the athlete. For me, I prefer to be called by my first name. Some insist on calling me Coach firstname, but I think at this stage of athletics, I like being on a first name basis. I believe that coaching young adults should be somewhat of a partnership, and I think calling by the first name helps that.

That’s a no brainer. He calls him Alberto.

When I started college 13 years ago everyone called the coach by his first name, and i thought it was a little weird and too casual, but I was a freshman so I followed suit. In High School everyone called the the coach, "Coach Last Name."

The trend towards casualness at the work place and with authority started way before I was old enough to have a say, probably in the 1980s when all the baby boomers became authority figures. You know that old joke, Mr. Smith is my father, you can call me John.

Escobar of course, what else would he call him?
