Daniels 3rd ed. doesn't talk a whole lot about tapering. And if you look at his plans, he certainly doesn't seem to go light the week prior to a marathon.
Take the plan for the "up to 41 miles" set. (This is just an example--I think the same can be said for the higher mileage plans as well.) While he has all easy mileage in the week before the marathon, he still has that crew doing 41 miles BEFORE the marathon. If you add in the 26.2 at the end of the week, they are doing 67.2 miles for the week. That makes it their highest mileage week by--you guessed it--26.2 miles. What's going on here?
I know the book talks about taking breaks when needed, and flexibility, but this seems a bit ridiculous when you think about the folks who might try following the plan to a T.
