Masciarelli had a great outdoor season coming off of a basketball season where she was barely even running (no workouts). Her mileage is low and her coach is being really patient. Tuohy might not even PR after high school.

The facts you state are not entirely true. She did workouts during basketball season per this article - almost daily 3-5 mile runs or perhaps 25 miles per week.

I think a lot of people are reading an awful lot into the last 2 weeks of Tuohy's season. In April she ran a pretty fast 1600 M leg on the DMR. At the end of the season, not so much. But, just my opinion.
It’d be interesting to see how the basketball/track transition works in the NCAA.
She beat Chmeil by 2 seconds why would anyone think that she would definitely beat Tuohy.

15-25 miles a week is less than half of what Tuohy is doing, and is not near enough to prepare for a 5k. And no workouts means she wasn't going out and doing 10x800 after basketball practice. Can't race a good 5k off of just 15 miles a week and no intervals.
Tuohy burned out big time. She planned to race pro meets over the summer but couldn't even finish her season. Maybe she will be fine next year, but there is a very realistic chance that Tuohy is going to head in the wrong direction.

On June 1 Masciarelli ran 9:21.44 in the 3k in a twilight meet - beating Aisling Cuffe in the process. Cuffe ran 15:55 recently.
On June 7 Tuohy ran 9:21.90 to win the NY State meet.
Masciarelli has the faster 3k time this season, and beat better competition. Tuohy burned out.

You can't compare a paced race with a strategic race. She didn't try to time trial the 5k at nationals. She ran to win and saved a kick.
The fact that she doesn't go around chasing fast times is exactly the reason she has more long term potential than Tuohy. Tuohy races hard way too much.
OP speaks the truth. I've been saying this for awhile now.
When I think of the kids I coach, the ones who end up "best" (ie: fastest) are the ones that come from a general athletic background. They play other sports along with running, and have a realistic calm attitude about the whole thing.
The high-mileage hyper-obsessed pure runners who have been training their entire lives are guaranteed to become resentful of the sport and burn out hard.
Tuohy will likely never run as fast as she did as a HS junior. I can see Sydney achieving great success in the NCAA.

That says it all. Touhy was 5 seconds ahead of Chmiel after a lap at the state championship. She would have gotten dusted by Touhy .

Did you watch the race? Mascarelli controlled it from the front for at least the last 800m. You are not doing yourself any favors by making up a stpry that suggests she had some furious spurt in the last few yards. Mascarelli DOMINATED that race.

You could be in the lead and control yet still be pushed. Cuffe might be at the very beginning of her season without the sharpness to outkick Masciarelli. I'm not underestimating her potential, I just dont see why anyone would count out Tuohy now.
Sydney will be better. At almost 6'00" tall and as lean as she is, she has the physicality to be much better long term. Its just she conserves more energy at that height. I feel like Touhy is also at the precipice of major burn out due to over specialization. Sydney goes to a challenging prep school, and maybe the decision to play basketball is actually a good one in her league at her level. Her sister runs for Hofstra D1. Brother played college D2 hoops. We shall see where Sydney ends up, but as a prep runner, maybe the ivy league is more her calling.
I doubt it. After spending a huge amount for high school, her parents may not want to spend another $300k for college when she could get a nice scholarship to run or play basketball.

Cuffe led Masciarelli until just over 800 meter remaining. Masciarelli let Cuffe set much of the pace, they passed 1600 meters in 5:04 if the announcer was correct. Masciarelli opened the lead fairly convincingly with a final 400 in about 67-68 second, and both runners were good over the final 200.
