I run 5ks a lot, but my second mile is always slower than the other two. The third mile is on par with the first one. However, when I run the second mile it doesn't FEEL slower--it's not like a classic case of going out too fast, hearing your breathing ragged and then dying.
When I hit the second mile I feel like my effort is the same by "feel" and heartrate (I don't wear a heart rate monitor though), but the time is off. And the courses I run are usually flat so hills aren't a factor.
Third mile I'm able to run a little faster and the times are much better.
I have endurance--usually run 45-50 mpw. I do 1 speedwork session a week to not burn out but still keep speed (4x1600, 5x1000, etc.). I also do a LR of 10-11 miles at the end of each week.
