U.S. entered WW2 after prolonged tension with Japan. A trade embargo. Several miscalculations by Japan prior to their 12/7/1941 attack. In Europe, Germany was a slow boil. Many kept thinking: He won't go any further than that ... during 1930's.
No war is justified. We should just surrender and go back to our video games and phones.

Probably a result of having decades of wars and conflicts that weren't justified since then. The government breaks trust with the people over and over again that soon that is all we know, and some people start to question the past justifications. I personally think WWII was absolutely justified, but it doesn't surprise me that confidence is slipping across the general population. People just don't trust the government anymore.

I would say the results fit well with each other in a relative sense. Actually quite a good judgment by you guys. I am positively surprised. Only the high number for the civil war is a bit strange. I thought you guys would be in favor of freedom and stated deciding their path on their own

That’s the wording of the prompt, which leaves some room for interpretation. Of the 34% who don’t say WWII was justified (most of whom answered “I don’t know”), some could believe that defending ourselves with military action after Pearl Harbor was justified, that aiding the allies in Europe was justified, but that dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (part of our “role”) were big no-no’s. I hope so anyway—that would make more sense.

And as someone born in the 70s, I don't see how I could ever say if it was justified or not. It's like someone born in 2039 telling me that the war in Afghanistan wasn't justified in 2003. How can people really know if they're not around while the actions are taking place?
Right now people may think Afghanistan wasn't justified.. but Sept 12th 2001, there wasn't anyone who thought it was a bad idea.

You presented the stat to appear that a third of Americans today didn't think it was justified.
I'll bet half the population of the US can't even name the event that finally bought the US into WW2, and I'll bet 95% can't tell you even in general terms why the US finally entered WW1.
Therefore, their opinion doesn't even matter (neither does mine, but at least I can answer those questions).

Do you know how many lives those nukes saved? A conventional attack on the Japanese mainland (operation downfall) would have cost about a million US lives and 5-10 million Japanese lives. Compared to 225,000 that died from the nukes and ultimately the nukes were the more humane alternative by a factor of 25. War is ugly and the atrocities committed by Imperial Japan and the Nazis cannot be overlooked.
And only 62% said the revolutionary war was justified.
If you look at context , more people polled said that WWII was justified than any other war in US history. Now maybe that will make you feel better.
Considering the responses, it would be interesting to see how this poll was constructed. Source says yougov.com. So maybe it was an internet poll which would automatically skew young and therefore likely push that justified number down.
So wouldn't take this poll at face value without more info.
Hindsight being 20/20. We should have done nothing more than keep the Nazis out of Britain and let Germany and the Soviet beat the poo out of each other.
