Coming in at 12:50.85(Fisher)and 12:50 87(McDonald), Fisher closed in 54.79 to Mcdonalds 55.89 to win. Seems Fisher learned to not be behind Mcdonald at the bell.

Do you people just look at splits and try to guess what happened in the race? If you didn't watch the race then don't comment on it.

Not legit win. McDonald was clearly only concerned about safely qualifying. I predict McDonald 1, Fisher 2 at nationals.
McDonald clearly eased up in the last 30 meters when he knew his qualifying position was secure (as did Teare). Not saying that Fisher would not have won anyway but some athletes (Dani Jones also) were running to qualify.
Did you mean 13:50? No way in hell is someone running 12:50 5k at a regional meet.

Paul Geis beat Lasse Viren in a heat at the 76 Olympics.
Really, no one ran 12:50 at an NCAA regional? He obviously meant 12:50 at the bell.
There are too many D2 dropouts on this site.

It looked like McDonald responded to Fishers move on final 100m, realized he wasn't going to be able to cover it and then played up the jog across the line a bit too much.
McDonald might have been able to win if that was aim, but i do think he tried to go with Fisher on the home stretch and was in a bit of an awkward position and wasn't going to win so tried to reaaaally show that no...he wasn't really trying at all.
They were legitimately racing the last part of the race as heat two was stacked with most of the top guys from the west.
Yes Fisher accelerated through the finish line and MacDonald backed off with 30 m to go. It would have taken a very fast close to have caught Fisher on that day.
In a fast race Fisher and
MacDonald are at a different level. Sadly, championship season distance races are seldom fast the entire race.
It has been exciting to watch Fisher and MacDonald race each other. In the future one will compete for the United States and the other Australia and that will be exciting to watch as well.
I think if McDonald was actually trying to win he would've beat Fischer by at least 15 meters. I've been watching him run all year, he had at least 2 more gears left that he didn't use.

You realize you're analyzing a qualifying heat, right?

yes, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to glean from it. It was a pretty bunched race going into final lap and no one was a lock to qualify until the final 150 or so.
Watching it again , McDonald looked pretty in control, i don' t think there's that much to read into it really besides that Fisher wanted to win the heat.
I was at the meet, in the press box. mcdonald was looking much better than fisher in the last mile, and I', 99% sure he's in better shape than Fisher. he didn't even try to win. meanwhile, Fisher was all arms in the last 50m trying to hold off a jogging mcdonald.
mcdonald will win NCAAs, no doubt.
Whoa it's just a qualifying race it means nothing but qualification

Here is Ovett running a 1500 heat. He was one of my favorite runners and I rooted for him against Coe, but he was a tool:

I was at the meet and saw something similar to this. Why would McDonald show his hand in the regional? People forget he’s been sub 13:20 for a couple years and ran 13:15 at the Commonwealth games early 2018. Fisher is a great collegiate talent but he’s not been close to this level.

Fisher deserves more credit than you're giving him. rarely has poor performances, is a lock for any podium at a championship.
Didn’t indoors teach you guys not to sleep on Geordie Beamish? He’ll challenge McDonald. Likely will beat Fisher.
The problem that many of the posters have is that they don’t realize this was a prelim. 95% of the runners raced the 5k as a prelim knowing they only had to be top 5. Nothing can be gleaned from these heats. I agree with the previous poster though if we are making predictions. The only thing that could impact it is if it is 100 degrees.
