I read this in Runner's World and it makes no sense. Why would easy barefoot jogging on grass or in the Nike Frees cause a stress fracture?

It happened to me too. Barefoot running can stress the calf muscles if you're not used to it. Even trackhead agrees with this. Stressed calf muscles can lead to sfx's.
I doubt he was running easy in them. Stress fractures are overuse injuries, it does't matter what shoes or lack there of you run in.
Pretty sweet that the add under this thread is for the nike frees.
The add is always for the frees when it has to do with the subject of the thread. The Jo\'s made a deal with a company to track certain key words, so when you post something about the Frees, the software will automatically post the add for the Frees.
And there is this... wrote:

You mean there are any other kind of injury? Underuse injuries?
Geez, maybe because going barefoot isn't neccesarily a good way to run?? I can't believe how many of you are convinced that this "all-natural" approach is the real deal.
I can't believe that you think it isn't the real deal.
You weren't so cynical when you were young and you ran 20 times a day, often barefoot.
ok people new rule...no more running in the frees
u want to avoid injury...go down to your local specialty running shoe store...the people there (if they are educated and do it right) will diagnose your foot and put you in the right shoe
believe it or not...shoes are designed for specific types of feet (if u want a bigger description just ask)
the frees are a fashion shoe...nothing else

If you twist your ankle on a trail run it is not an overuse injury. If you fall and break your wrist it is not an overuse injury. Overuse injuries come from repeatedly doing the wrong motion or stressing a part of your body so many times it eventually wears down. It is cumulative, not intantaneous.

Amen to that! Step 1: Nike makes a commercial with Alan Webb running barefoot to promote the Frees; Step 2: Runners searching for that one "secret" that will make them faster make a connection; Step 3: Nike makes boat loads of money by making glorified aqua socks; Step 4: Many get injured because they do all their runs in the afore mentioned glorified aqua socks; Step 5: Nike releases a new commercial with Alan Webb promoting the newest model of the 11 lbs Shox; Step 6: Nike rakes in profits as the Shox overtake the Frees in total sales.
Meanwhile, the Hansons are out running 140 mile weeks in whatever the hell shoe works best for them.

That would be Brooks.
Webb was in a Nike Free commercial? How was it?

I've had people running in the Frees for over a year and they've had nothing but good things to say.
Your feet can do well on their own -- just give it some time.
What is the difference between the Nike Free and the old Nike Sock Racer?
I do all of my running in the free's. I have for a while. Wejo does about 90% of his running in the free's, they have helped his injury. I think it helps to be a light, efficient and durable runner to train in minimalist shoes. THen again i think it helps to be light, efficient and durable if you want to be elite...
He probably got the stress fracture from his shoes.
That's why he was running barefoot on the grass.
Yeah I think these are best used as a minimalist or workout shoe, not something to go knock out ten miles in.

It's a matter of adaptation-- balancing stress with recovery.
I just wore my son's frees on a drive north for a few hours to relax my feeet. Shiite! Two days later my arch hurts and I never even stood up in them.
