Seems odd. There's almost a 4-miler every month while only a few 5Ks each year (Washington Heights, Brooklyn, Percy Sutton, etc). Why the 4-mile distance instead of a more standard 5k?

Just a wild guess, but probably fits central park easier(isn't that where their races are usually held?). For example two races based on point A to point B.

Why be anal about exact distances? Just race from point A to point B. First one over there wins.
It’s almost like the inner loop is exactly 4 miles which makes it an easy distance for them to stage up or something

It's because the start and finish lines can be close to one another. If they held a 5K in Central Park, they would not be able to move the checked bags to the finish line in time. This is why they recently changed the R-U-N 5k in July to a 6k.
Used to run NYRR 4 and 5 miles races in CP back in the 80's. The northern part of the park has some surprisingly challenging ups and downs. These distances fit the park well. 5Ks would be too short.
