Really disturbing news yesterday of an alleged machete attack on two hikers. I've read a few news sources and the story goes something like this:
Allegedly a crazy AT hiker assaults several hikers last month in Tennessee I believe. Cops confront the man and let him go saying he had only a guitar. Hiker crosses state line and another jurisdiction picks him up for the same crimes, assault and drug possession, hiker pleads guilty and is released on probation with fines. Fast forward to two nights ago in Virginia, suspect was allegedly put on a bus to go home from a fellow hiker but suspect just went north and back on trail. Four hikers were together, I allegedly at a shelter or campsite and two went one way and two went the other, presumably in the late night. Sometime in the early morning or late night an SOS call goes to the police. They go to the ping and they find a knife assault victim on trail and the suspect dogs runs out of the woods and eventually leads the police to the suspect. The second victim supposedly hiked six miles for help. It's not known if the victims knew the suspect. A large section of the trail, 16 miles is still closed as the law enforcement is looking int the crime scene for any more possible victims. The whole situation is a worse nightmare for the Appalachian Trail community. It gives me the heebeejeebees being a past thru hiker myself.
