I have a September goal race to try to BQ (my PR was at this race last year).
I have done two half marathons this spring with little consistent training (went 1:40 and 1:37) and no real goal time set as they were both bucket list type events.
Background:
- My PR last year was a BQ attempt. My training leading up to the race was the best that I have ever done (previous PR of 3:27 in 2017), but was still relatively inconsistent and unfocused.
- Previous training was around 40-50 MPW with 2 days of speedwork (Tuesday and Friday) with a long run on Sunday. Only had a rest day every third Wednesday.
- Never been injured.
- Not a lifelong runner. Played team sports in HS and soccer in college. Picked up running at 29 and have run a bunch of marathons, a few ultras (50k & 50M), a bunch of IM 70.3, and too many 13.1s and below to count.
- I've only gotten serious about getting faster for the past two years but, like I said, never really stuck to a training plan completely (kids, work, etc.; something always became an excuse).
I just started my training plan on Monday and am dedicating myself to it. A normal week looks like this:
Monday - 4/5 miles easy
Tuesday - Tempo run/speedwork/hills (varies)
Wednesday - mid-distance recovery run (5-8 miles)
Thursday - mid-distance easy run (5-10 miles)
Friday - Tempo run/speedwork/hill (varies)
Saturday - short recovery run (4-6 miles)
Sunday - long run
Is there anything else that I'm missing? I've already seen some improvement in my "easy" pace over the past few months as I've dropped 25lbs since January (goodbye forever, beer!). My average pace for them I'm not even thinking about pace has dropped from 9:30-10 to around 8:15. When I push it I can hang on to a 6ish pace for a few miles, but I haven't done that with any consistency since I've just been running without a proper training plan over the past few weeks.
I know I'll probably have to hit around 3:02 to feel good about my chances for toeing the line in Hopkinton, so I know I really need to push myself this summer.
Any training suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!
