Whenever I use my GPS watch (forerunner 235) while on the track the distance on my watch is always greater than the track length itself. For example, a mile will click off before I hit 4 laps (so every mile on the track using my gps is like 1.04). It adds up if youre doing a tempo on the track or something
However, whenever Im using it while out on the roads/towpath for recovery runs my watch is pretty much in sync with everybody elses, so I know its not defective . Just wondering what gives. Does this mean doing tempos off the track will always be faster than on the track, primarily because your using your watch as a reference? (I.e, track: 2 mile rep would be about 2.10 on the GPS for me. I know its 2 miles however because its the track. But off the track stopping at 2.0 on the GPS would put me at a deficit because on the track hitting 2 miles would be before the 2 mile mark [would have to be at 2.10]). It could add up and affect your pace if you did, say, a 5 mile tempo.
I have a feeling it has to do with signal, but Ive run on some trails with good coverage / open skies so a bit curious.
