8 months to sub 1:18 half marathon where do you start me now prior to the build

Working up to 3-4x2 mile w/ 3 min rest @ HM pace is a good workout

Is that something you would be doing early on prior to the build?

If so do you do them at a slower pace early on and as fitness develops increase the pace? Like instead 5:55 pace start at 6:30 pace and as fitness improves increase the pace.

I’m looking for info on what will best prepare me for the build like 8 months out. I’m coming back so I don’t have my running back yet

3 month base

3 months working on your 5k/10k( try to get down to 17/35 for 5k/10k)

2 month half marathon build up

Any specific types of running during base?

Do we try to peak for a 10k or 5k or do we just keep building right into the half marathon build from the 5k/10k

Base phase: mostly easy running, building up your volume. Every two-three days do some strides. Fartlek whenever you feel good and do some steady state running 2-3 times a week.

For the 5k/10k phase, add some harder workouts twice a week i.e. 10 x 1k @ 10k pace w/ 1-2 minute rest and 12 x 400 @ 5k pace w/ 1-2 minute rest.

Half marathon build up: First two weeks like your base phase, but throwing in long runs w/ surges @ half marathon pace. And than start adding workouts like 3-5 x 3k @ half marathon pace w/ 1k steady and progression tempo type runs. About 4-6 weeks into the build up do a 10k race as a tune up.
