2:10 male
2:30 female
I ran a 2:17 as a HS freshman male, and I considered myself decent. As a sophomore, having run the 800m thrice thus far, I am down to a 2:15, however I believe I am surely capable of 2:10-2:12 range.
Assuming you're male, anything under 2:20 is not too shabby for a freshman.
2:17 male
2:33 female
Have coached male to a 2:07 and female to 2:14 as freshman. Generally sub 2:30 and sub 2:20 is pretty good.
2:30-2:20: Maybe you'll grow a lot before next track season.
Sub-2:20: You might be a decent miler.
Sub-2:15: Our 4x800 team isn't going to score points. Welcome to the 2nd leg.
Sub-2:10: Maybe we'll score points after all. And a few more in the open 800.
Sub-2:05: Fast. You'll make it to league finals. Why do our upperclassmen suck so much?
Sub-2:00: Never seen on this side of the state before. You are the second coming of David Rudisha. Get ready to run 4x400, 4x800, the open 800, and either the 400 or 1600 at every meet for the rest of your career.
under 3:25 and you are faster than a senior I dislike (girls). But that sucks so....
In order to be a contributor on your team you should be at or under 2:50 for a girl and 2:25 for a guy. To score points then aim for 15-20 sec faster.
Anything around or under 2:20 is a decent start. I barely broke 2:30 last year, and would’ve been considered slow, even for a 9th grader, and finished near the back. Good is sub-2:10 IMO.
What? Those times are terrible. I can’t remember a year not having 2-3 freshmen sub 2:10 and another 5 sub 2:15 on our team. Some years we get a 2:01.
HS freshman or college freshman?
I think everyone (myself included) is assuming OP is a high school freshman. Maybe you are to, and have just had some damn good HS freshmen though...
College freshmen? If a college freshman at a decent program isn’t running 1:54, they won’t be on the team next year. 1000 HS freshmen 2:07 last year. Our freshmen record is 1:58. We had a guy go 1:59 a few years ago. The fastest this year is only 2:10. 2:20 really is a joke. That puts a guy on pace to maybe run 2:05 as a senior.
