Is there merit to racing in these shoes or are they more of a training spike? I feel like for 5k-10k I'd rather just have matumbos or vaporflies.
A lot of people like them especially for XC + 10K. If you're someone who hasn't bought into the Vaporfly hype for a track 10K but feels destroyed by traditional spikes this is a good option.
I didn't get a pair, but I would probably use them for XC racing/training and long/faster track workouts. Especially if the track is wet but it's a flats workout.
Muir's shoes were just 4 percents slimmed down as spikes, not the outright 4 percents with a plate that Gwen has.
Rupp's spikes were just 80s uppers with modern 'fabric,' and a newer spike plate. Assuming they were created to offer more support for the issues he was developing. I've got the photo somewhere, but certainly it was posted here, too.

I like using them in training so as to not wear down my racing spikes (Mamba 5s for 800-1500, Matumbos for 3-5k). They’re basically Streak LTs with a Matumbo plate, making them super durable... any holes in the upper I just repair with shoe goo!
They would also work well for racing 5-10k on the track, or on XC courses that don’t have rocks which could damage the plate. I find that these have extra pop over the standard Streak LTs.

Rupp had a lot of spikes designed personally for him (Nike Streak LT 2 w/ Matumbo plate, OG Vic w/ carbon fiber shank, Vic 3 prototype, Matumbos with thick ZoomX sole) but you're probably thinking about this one:

So they just took what looks like an oldschool upper and threw it on what also looks like a custom 1:1 tooling.
