Full disclosure, I have some good connections, so I know a little bit about what's up.
I will say that most Nike guys are racing road miles in standard Nike flats -- mostly Streak LTs, sometimes the Japanese market flats make an appearance. Some of them may be prototypes of the next version (no LT 5s have appeared as of yet), and very, very rarely are they customized, and even then, it's usually just an upper change. (streak LT 2 bottom/mamba 2 upper was relatively common a few years ago) No carbon fiber shanks in their LTs.
I think most of the R&D right now is going into their Vaporfly line. They have some very interesting things coming down the pipe, some maybe people have seen, and some not.
That's all I can say.
Thanks for the info.
A question you may be able to answer: Say someone were a top-tier Nike athlete and they were really into shoes. Would Nike be willing go mate existing uppers/midsoles/plates/outsoles if they were compatible?
For example, it’s pretty well known that Mo Farah has used the OG Victory plate forever on successive generations of upper, meaning he has probably been adamant about requesting that specific plate.
Lately Nike’s designers seem to be practically airdropping crates full of various combinations of the Vaporfly 4% to Kenyan groups, especially Kipchoge’s. I assume the sub-Kipchoges “get what we give you” in terms of top-of-the-line shoes that are probably returned to Nike and analyzed. I’m sure there is more dialogue/feedback between Kipchoge and Tinker (or whoever) about what works for him.
I remember Rupp having crazy spotted Ventsaris and the like while still in HS. Maybe Rupp is a shoe geek and requested certain combinations, or maybe Salazar was choosing combinations.
I guess my curiosity in all of this is whether these one-off combinations could be feasible for the public someday ala the old Nike ID, but so much better. If people will pay $250+ for a Vaporfly could we ever see a price point where Nike ID “2.0” could offer actual customizability?
