I’m not saying it’s not valid, I’m just curious as to why.
With the Power 5 conferences it makes sense because of the higher level of competition, but there are several DI teams/conferences that are the competition level of nationally ranked DII-DIII-NAIA-NJCAA schools that are allowed into DI only meets.
Why not set performance standards and a meet maximum athlete cap? If a non-DI school can field a full team (per NCAA definition) of athletes that meet the standards to compete in the meet, let them in. If they can’t, let their individuals who do meet the performance standards compete.
There could be other reasons that I’m not privy to that explain these exclusively DI meets, but if it’s strictly because of school athletic classification, it seems like it’s doing more harm than good for the sport of track and field.
