Actually, this is one of my favorite movies. One shouldn't have to have a movie explained to them. If a movie explains itself too much then the art of the movie is lost. Art is open for interpretation...you shouldn't have to be told what to think/believe about it. I really like the movie. I think its pretty good dark comedy.

What I got overall from the movie was that Donnie lived in a world where no one truly understood him yet he saw through to the nature of the people around him very clearly. It also deals with the question-"what defines crazy?" Donnie was schizophrenic and repeatedly hallucinated the image of a bunny yet he understood who was a genuine person vs. a self-obsessed hypocrite more than anyone else. He dates a girl who isn't popular yet sees that she isn't as f***ed up as people think, he realizes which teachers are actually teaching worthwhile material and care about relating to their students etc...haven't seen the movie in awhile so I can't remember all of it. Anyways, thats some of what I got from the movie.

my friends love it but i didn't see what all the fuss was about. yeah, its neat and I "get it" but it's not THAT great.
i saw it and my friend asked if i liked it, and i said that it was ok, so he assumed that i didn't get it. i got it too, i just wasn't gonna cry about how amazing it was. he insisted for about 5 minutes that i didn't get it, but never tried to explain it because i don't think he could either. he was just on the bandwagon.

A 15-year-old boy named Donnie Darko's life is saved by a man in a 6-foot-tall bunny suit, who tells him that the world is going to end by the end of the month. Donnie soon discovers that his life was not supposed to be saved, and this event has separated the Universe into two new ones, the Primary Universe and the Tangent Universe. The Tangent Universe is becoming unstable, and will soon collapse and be destroyed, taking both universes with it. Donnie, the only one with this knowledge, must find a way to go back in time and stop his life from being saved, even if it means killing himself...!!

ok, so what's the point of burning the house, destroying the school, etc.?
the fact that he now had a "freebie" to do whatever he wanted or needed to do i.e. expose hypocrasy, etc..

but if time is reversed, what's the point? all of that becomes undone.
My interpretation was when Frank the bunny (manipulated dead) said "The world is going to end in 28 days blah blah blah blah", he meant that Donnie's world, the tangent universe was going to end.
At midnight a Tangent Universe spins off of the Primary Universe, signified by the appearance of an Artifact; here represented by a jet engine. Tangent Universes are inherently unstable and will collapse in less than a month, taking the Primary Universe with it, if not closed off. Closing the Tangent Universe is the duty of the Living Receiver (Donnie), given super powers to perform this task. Those who die within the Tangent Universe are the Manipulated Dead (Frank and, according to the back of the book, Gretchen) who are also given certain powers, understanding of what is going on, and the ability to contact the Living Receiver via the Fourth Dimensional Construct (water). Everyone else in the orbit of the Living Receiver are the Manipulated Living, who are subconsciously drawn to push and prod the Living Receiver towards his destiny, closing the Tangent Universe and, apparently, dying by the Artifact.
So Frank was pushing Donnie to close off the Tangent Universe, or the Primary Universe would indeed end.

what does this have to do with running?
the reason that movie ultimatly sucked was because none of that nonsense was explained in the movie. it's like a fake magic eye poster; you claim to see a boat but i just see static.

Jack- man, that interpretation was awesome. Great job. You are one deep thinker. I'd love to read some of your other works. Could you offer your thoughts on Hamlet?

wow, weird, sb is what i usually post under.
check the link below, article in Salon that explains things pretty handily.
you can also watch the deleted scenes with commentary from the director on the dvd. if i remember correctly the director says something about how the bunny is supposed to represent god, but i don't remember any details about his explanation so i'm not able to be very helpful to you (unless you still have the dvd). i do remember that i enjoyed the movie more before i heard the director's take on what it "means."
