Should the US give back it's Mixed Relay bronze medal at World XC since it only got it because of this DQ (video)?

    If you weren't up really early this morning, you missed that the US originally finished 4th in the mixed relay but was upgraded to bronze after Morocco was DQd for handing over the sash too early.

    Mind you, no material advantage was gained. If you were going to hand off early to try to cheat, you'd have a woman hand off early to man , not vice versa.

    This is yet another example to me of where the IAAF should pick up the flag and not call a DQ.

    Does anyone know how this came about? I sure hope it wasn't because of an US protest.

    Update: After an appeal, Morocco has been reinstated, moving the US back to 4th.

    Why have rules at all then? They did something stupid (no reason to be that close to the edge of the exchange zone) and the rules were enforced.

    We have rules in sport to make sure the competition is fair and make sure that at the end of the competition thewinners have won because they are better than their competitors, and not because they cheated.

    The point of rules isn't to have rules for rules sake, it's to insure that the competition is fair.

    This wasn't cheating. If anything, it hurt Morocco.

    In the NFL, if the pass interference has no impact on the outcome of the play (pass in uncatchable), you don't call the foul.

    Look, I get it if it's a 4 x 100. An infraction should 100% be a DQ. But in an 8k race? Are you kidding me?

    FYI, the officials DQd Morocco. Morroco appealed. They won their appeal.

    Morroco is still silver. If you can read, read the iaafs recap

    did you not bother to read this it says Little more than an hour later, Morocco was disqualified for handing over the timing wristband before the start of the exchange zone. They later filed an appeal against the decision and it was accepted, meaning they held on to their silver medal.

    Remember when Quigley got dqed in the steeplechase heats for stepping like 3mm on the inside rail at london 2017? That was a bs call and totally took the US out of contention for sweeping the steeple. I dont think US should give it back but the IAAF should stop being completely anal about a few inches. Rules are rules and its hurt US in the past too

    Just the opposite. It was real journalims. On the international tv broadcast, they said that Morocco had been DQd and the US elevated to a medal (On the broadcast, I believe they also said that Morocco had appealed and it had been denied but I"m not positive)). I thought it was absurd and started this thread.

    Apparently, the appeal judges agreed with me as the decision was overturned. So it was good journalism. Journalists asks questions, put the heat on the authorities and hopefully the act appropriately as a result.

    Why in the heck do you think USATF hasn't responded about the Olympic Trials standards? It's cause they are getting a lot f heat.

    This is a good point, I am good with letting go, but it always seems like when the shoe is on the other foot the rules get enforced.

    OK- it's not like the exchange helped Morocco BUT they had 20 freaking meters to make the exchange. The "slower" runner could have stood 10 meters into the zone.
    Maybe they should be DQ'd just for the stupidity of it.

    Disagree. They should 100% be anal even if it's as little as one proven millimetre. Otherwise the sport's integrity is shot because enforcing rules becomes a subjective opinion of any given meet organisers.

    Same thing happened with Filip Ingebrigtsen at the Euro indoors. Yeah sure would have made no difference re him qualifying but if you don't enforce that when where do you draw the line? A guess at 2/3 metres is ok? 10 metres? Half a lap?! Just follow the rules and no guess work required...

    Agreed. But what about uniform rules? I see more high school DQs resulting from someone wearing the wrong color shirt under their uniform, a small stripe on a pair of tights, a slightly too large clothing manufacturer logo, etc. than I do from anything else, including false starts. A large Nike swoosh on a pair of tights does not give any competition advantage. Unfortunately in T&F, we have too many rules that do NOT create fair competition, and are in fact "rules for rules sake."
