I'll be going to Australia in a few weeks and plan to summit Uluru before the climb gets banned. One of the reasons for the ban was the high number of deaths on that climb. AFAIK, it's non technical, so most of the deaths were from heart attacks due to the steepness and strenuousness of the hike.
Considering that, is this something I need to train for? I'm not in my best shape right now, but I still run regularly and estimate that I can squeeze out a 5:30 mile or so if I had to race today. The only hiking experience I have is climbing from 8000' to 10,000' and back, but that was spread out over 3 miles (6 miles round trip). The hike wasn't that tough, but it was also less steep than Uluru.
