I'm running 40mpw and am currently in 18:30 5k shape. To give context, I started running a year ago after a long hiatus and slashed my times pretty quickly. Was in 21:30 min 5k shape off no training a year ago, took off some weight, and gradually increased mileage. Been at 40 for a few months. What kind of success have you people had with adding mileage of easy running? I'd be willing to go to 60 or 70 over time if it would net me a sub 16-17 time but not so interested if it would only get me into the 17s. Does anyone know the differences in how people respond to mileage? I've never been high mileage; ten years ago I ran 17 mins on 40 mpw so I suspect I have a little more to give with my current mileage before I bump it up. I really have no idea how my body would react to it, I'm curious to see how other people's fitness improved once ramping up over 40.
