It's been a long time since I've followed college Track and Field but the last couple of years I've tried to take more of an interest, and what I see saddens me a great deal. It seems that there are a large number of men's teams that are unwilling or unable to try to be competitive. It seems like every conference has about 30% of men's teams competing for a title, 20% at least looking like they are trying to build something of a program and 50% not even trying. At least in football and basketball the ADs at those bottom 50% schools fire the coaches every couple of years so it looks like they're trying to build something, that's clearly not the case in Track.
What gives it away the most in my mind is when I see teams leaving entire events or even event disciplines empty on the men's side, when they are 3, 4 or even 5 women deep on the women's side in the same events. Is this where our sport has landed, just a Title IX offset for most schools?
