Recently I've been thinking about the priority of long runs and tempo runs in the training scheme of a 800M/1600M runner. How effective would it be to cycle between a long run and tempo run every week instead of doing a long run and tempo run weekly? In place of doing these primarily aerobic workouts, I would put more emphasis into the anaerobic side of training doing workouts ranging in intensities from the 400M to 1600M pace. VO2 max workouts would still be a weekly priority for me. Would this only be effective in the second half of the track season or would it be effective throughout the entire season?
