I find track and field to be interesting in helping understand our genetic inheritance of our ancestor's lifestyle. For 2.6 million years, our ancestors pursued animals throughout the savanna, then throughout the world, in pursuit of the highest quality energy and nutrients, which were required to support our large brains. The fact that there was a division of labor in this pursuit, I believe, is reflected in the sex differential between Olympic running and field events. Here are the differentials between men and women's world records:
Running-(all events) women are 10% slower
Jumping (high and long jump) -women 15% less
Throwing(javelin)- women 27% less
The evidence is clear: men were the hunters, women were the gatherers/child rearers
