I'm a fan of both of these guys for sure, but I just can't see Krar beating Walmsley. Both are obviously talented, and have serious pedigree, but Jim absolutely crushes at the fast 50 mile-ish races.

I have to say Walmsley because he has been performing at a high level recently, and Krar to my knowledge has largely been absent the last couple of years.

True. If this were 100 miles I would say Krar since he has a better track record of actually finishing and winning 100 mile races. But it’s also worth noting that Krar even when he was dominating prior to his hiatus he didn’t really race a lot of shorter than 100 mile races and seemed to only use shorter distances as tune up races.

His Leadville win last year was arguably as impressive if not more so than Walmleys CR at WS. Krar was minutes from the CR which has been said to be an untouchable CR and the course is believed to be at least a mile longer now. This was a week after he placed really well in the Leadville 100 MTB race. Also there was literally no chase pack pushing him, second place was around 2 hours back.

Assuming they are both healthy and have a good day it could a really good race and really close.

You guys are clueless. Krar didn't come close to Matt Carpenter's Leadville CR while Walmsley absolutely demolished the Western States record that Krar is his prime could not sniff.

If Walmsley wins, he'll probably be the only human who can drop down to 1:04 HM fitness then ramp back up for a hard 80k.

9 minutes isn’t close on a course that is a mile longer?

Why is the newer Leadville course 1 mile longer?

I was under the impression that the course was easier and maybe slightly shorter after the 2009 Helicopter crash rerouting.

We’re I a betting man, my money would be on Jim. As well, Krar is Canadian (born in Hamilton).

Krar "in his prime" was running only 80ish miles per week, working a job that compromised his ability to train consistently, was married, and was battling depression. He won Western States twice, 2 and 6 minutes short of Olson's CR, on much hotter weather than Tim, and was 2nd in his first run there. He was also in his late thirties, so I don't know about it being his prime.

Meanwhile, Jim is in his 20s, single, healthy, and can run 100+ mile weeks because his only job is training and recovering.

Krar is definitely the most talented of the two. And a far better ambassador for the sport. And, unlike Jim, he's not a jackass.

Who is Eric and why are you so psychotic about him? Obviously you aren't taking my advice.

I can try to dig up a source but what I’ve in multiple places is that the course is believed to be longer than it was when the CR was which is part of the reason so many think it’s an untouchable CR.

Either way Walmsley basically dedicated 3 years to breaking that CR. Who’s to say Krar couldn’t have done the same had he put that much focus on it?

Whose to say Walmsley wouldn't have broken the Western CR the first try if he hadn't taken a wrong turn? Until you actually do something, it's all speculation.

Anyone who has taken a critical look at the splits says so. He was slowing down before that turn and most like would not have.

I agree with your point. But speculation and analysis of this sort of stuff is fun. But while we’re discussing what these guys have done and not done it’s again worth pointing out Krar is the only 1 of them to have won more than a single 100 mile race and has done multiple times in a year. Walsmley has shown a lot of range but if you’ve ever taken a look at Krar PR’s you’d know he has the same kind of range.
