59:13 smashing Farah's European Record! He is only 22! Discuss
The header made me think he had an accident
I knew he was in for an ace performance since he dropped that fire road 10 time in October, taking 12 seconds off Farah's Eu mark with a 27:32. This time only ten seconds, though Farah's had many more attempts at the distance.
What does Wanders plan on doing for the Olympics? Marathon?
Fantastic achievement, and he's still very young too.
I see he moved full-time to Kenya a couple of years ago. I wonder how long the naturalization process is in Kenya? It would be funny if he ended up switching nationality and started competing for them. Maybe other Europeans and Americans would follow? Wonder what El K would think about that?
Why does he need naturalization to live in Kenya?
He's pretty much guaranteed to represent Switzerland, without having to compete much in qualification.
This is really fast for such a young white athlete. It's not his first big PR so seems legit to me. His 10k was a hint in this direction.
GO WANDERS!
He declared a few months ago he would try Marathon distance after 2020.
He spoke about Track (5000 - 10000) for the 2019 and 2020 summer seasons, keeping a Half Marathon in the late winter / early spring (Feb - March).

5 Morris Gachaga KEN 14:13 28:11:00 41:56:00 56:11:00 59:22:00
I could see him being the 3rd European under 27 Minutes for 10000 on the Track (Mourhit and Farah are the other 2) The Fastest European Born athlete is Pinto of Portugal in 27:12. Under 13 would be a good goal for the 5000.
Why would he ever want to become Kenyan? As a Swiss, he’s got one of the best citizenships in the world. His reasons for training in Kenya are his own.

So lots of tea and potatoes.
The myth of the Vaporflys may just have been broken or Adidas has caught up.
He has the perfect training environment in Switzerland (lots of altitude, St Moritz etc) and goes to Kenya? WHY?
His HM time doesn't correlate with his usual performances. High chance he isn't clean, but the Bekele/Radcliffe/Koch fanboys will come out again and defend him just because he is a young European and beacon of hope.

More training partners in Kenya, that would be the only thing he does not have in Switzerland Training wise.
He shines in races where you can get there just a few days before the race.
His performances in big champs have been average....
BS

Also, lots of altitude YEAR ROUND, maybe?
I don't know what people think Switzerland is like. I hear there is snow.
Julien is from Geneva Switzerland , the city is about 300m above sea level(no altitude training there), and from December till April you have good chances of stumbling upon snow (though it depends on the years). During those months the temperatures vary from -10 to 10 (sometimes) , so if you're looking to run up to 190km per week in the cold it's quite tough...( you waste so much energy just trying to keep yourself warm).
Ah so, if you want to hit altitude resorts, basically you will only be able to do quality runs from end May till October... Making it short and concise Switzerland is good for year round ski practice, not really running.
Moving to Kenya is actually a brave and smart decision, provided you are OK with living a simpler life without the commodities of a "luxury city " like Geneva.
Looking forward to Julien's upcoming races.
