Sometimes I know I had a better kick but just didn’t use it. Or if I feel I had a lot left in the tank after the finish, then I know I really was better than the guy who beat me especially if they were not that far ahead.
I feel like if family or friends ask, it’s just easier to say I won, than to explain that I lost, but was better than the other guys and the result wasn’t a reflection of reality.

I thought it was common knowledge that most 30 and older runners even generally near the sub-elite tier did this after getting it out of their system in their 20s and growing out of the whole medal/big money "winner" song and dance. Either that or they're the ones who eventually decide they're going to really "go for it" and get strangely into Ironman. Once you've done it a few times and have anything remotely resembling an actual career it's better to quietly cleanup in the first 3/4 and skip out before the pony show starts.
It is not subjective. Everyone starts here and finishes there, first one over the line wins.
No because you didn't win, the other guy won. How you feel is irrelevant, results is what matters.

Haven't you learned anything in the last two years? Reality is what you make it. You decide what is true and what is fake. I'm young, handsome, smart and extremely talented. I have a great vocabulary. I have lots of words. I'm also an impressive runner. I have shoe boxes filled with finisher's medals.

You didn't win, maybe you can tell them you "won" second place. Do you know what winning means?
What constitutes “winning” is a personal thing. If your goal was to run a certain time or to be one of the top X finishers, then you won if you accomplished that goal. Why wouldn’t you tell people that you won then?
You *are* a winner. Everyone is a winner. Everyone is special in their own way.
Those mean people who ran ahead of you can never take away your sense of winning, because it's in your heart.
Hang your participation ribbon on the wall with pride. And tell everyone that YOU ARE A WINNER. NO MATTER WHAT.

That's lame. The preferred method on LRC is to harness science to prove that you are faster than you actually run. These methods won't let you say you won the race, but it will let say you "could/should" have won, and that you are an X.XX-runner where X.XX is faster than you have ever actually run.

I always say I took first in the Schrodinger Division.
You could not have won, and I will mathematically prove it:
Runner X is behind Runner Y at T(ime)1. In order for X to pass Y, he must first get to the point Y occupies at T1. At that point - T2 - Y is now further ahead, past that initial point. X must now get to the point that Y occupies at T2, but by the time he does - T3 - Y is again slightly further ahead. And so on...
For this reason, Runner X could get infinitly close to Runner Y, but could never actually pass - or tie - Runner Y.
