22M running for about 14 months now, prs 17:45 - 5k (august), 56:15 - 15k (december), 1:22:28 - HM (recent). I'm running my first marathon in april to shoot for sub3. Having started running quite recently, I opted for a lower mileage plan so as not to get injured - using Daniel's 2Q with 40 miles max.
The workouts are very doable so far, but I'm wondering whether sub3 is realistic on the low mileage. Training also includes about 2 hours of cycling each week. Wondering whether anyone here has experience running Daniel's 2Q low mileage with a fast-ish goal and whether they found it sufficiently prepared them for their goal race. Is it generally better to ditch the quality in favour of volume when lifetime mileage is low - or does a fast marathon warrant ample threshold/speedwork?
As an aside, is it better to use recent race performance VDOT or goal pace VDOT? I plan my workouts using goal pace VDOT but find I'm generally running a tad faster.
