What's the, appropriate amount of weekly mileage during track for a 10th grader that went 16:45 for 5k in xc?
My first thought is about 35mpw with a 8-10 miler on a Saturday or Sunday. One rest day per week.

Too low
Your mileage is too low. If you want to improve, you've got to gradually bring your mileage up

Focus on the second part of this statement. Personally, I would say maybe bring it up to 40-45, but don't go higher than that until the summer. If you start running 60 mpw as a sophomore, you'll have no room to grow and you'll be at a much higher risk of injury than if you don't start running 60 mpw until junior or senior year. My advice; run 40-45 this spring, then over the summer build up to 60 mpw going into the cross country season.
