I agree that random people aren’t even going to know about wearing spikes.
So you're assuming that out of 4 guys, none of them would know anything about spikes and tell the rest of the others? Where the hell can you find a group of guys who are that ignorant about sports?
This is probably the equivalent of not knowing that wetsuits exist for water sports.
Heck, I've never speed skated in my life, and even I know that speed skates are different from ice hockey and figure skates.
Where can you find a group of guys (or women) that ignorant about sports? Just about everywhere.
If you know that different equipment exists for each skating discipline congratulations, that puts you far above the norm.
In my years competing in distance running and then cycling, I cannot believe the kinds of questions I've gotten from otherwise intelligent people. Non-Athletic, sedentary folk just don't have a clue about the purpose-built equipment and apparel used in sports. I've been asked if I wear a leather jacket when I cycle, to keep warm, or what kind of jeans I wear when running in winter. Friends and family, who you'd think would know better, seem to think that "bike racing" consists of me riding a Wal-Mart bike in street clothes to meet some friends on a corner so we can see who can get to the next utility pole fastest.
