Obviously the OP isn’t that smart. He saw this guy doing intervals and thought he was gonna challenge him for crying out loud. Couldn’t you tell by his workout pace that he wasn’t a 16:30 guy?

I run way more than my results would suggest. But, I like running and it’s good for me personally to have goals and a competitive outlet. Even if it is just racing against a clock.

Yes, to the OP. I for one think running is useless. I prefer to wake up everyday go to work and return to my Mazda to go back home. After that, I will return to watch Netflix and scroll through Tinder in my quest to find the love of my life. This is 340 of the days of the year for me. Training to try hard for something is not worth it.

Over and over again , I get a kick out the runner that runs one speed not matter what the distance . He / she thinks doing “ speed work “ will help the 10 k and they proceed to run 6 800’s at exactly the 10 k pace . Probably 3:45 or 4:00 per rep or whatever the 10 k pace but never changing gears . Lol

Exactly, I'm training for an ultra and I'm the slowest person whose life revolves around running. I love running but I'll probably never run a 5k in less than 30 minutes. I'm a natural sprinter and used to win a lot of races back in the day but my races were all under 400m; I don't have the genetics to be a fast distance runner. Combining my love of running with ultra endurance is great - it's challenging, requires me to put in a lot of miles/training and I don't feel so bad that I'm the slowest person out there because for me it isn't about speed - it's about the joy of running...

Know a girl mid 30's who runs 3:20-3:30 marathon , devotes all her time and money training , yet has little regard for diet for some reason. People would call her " chubby " , if they saw her in gym clothing . All this time training and running , yet if she lost 25 lbs she might be able to run 3:10 range .

Eh, she probably isn't training as much as you think. Anyone putting in real high mileage, 120+ a week isn't going to have more than 5-10 extra pounds unless they live off junk food.

Anyways, this thread got me thinking. Some people have absolute crap diets. For them, devoting their time and energy to running may be a strategy to stay somewhat fit instead of being a fatty. They may need to devote a lot of time and money to watching, reading about, travelling for running in order to have the motivation to put in whatever training they do. When you think about it, running is usually pretty boring and I like running. I know if I find it boring most of the time, its got to be miserable for others.

Fred Lebow (RIP) was like a 9-10 minute/mile runner

you may remember him for organizing a little race called the NYC Marathon for decades

but also would do laps around the hospital while being treated for cancer, that's pretty hard core dedicated

3:20 is a good time for a woman, well under BQ standards and ots of people who obsess about running dont have the ability to achieve a BQ. that time give or take half an hour on each side it is the sort of time I would expect from a serious female marathon runner. It annoys me how people have to be sub olympic to be taken seriously here. ? I know you will disagree but I hope you all get average genetics in your next life so you can find this out for yourself.

My life revolves around running even though I am slow. I like to run a couple marathons per year. My fastest time is 9 hours and I weight 700 pounds.

Dude you ran a high 18 5K, so sorry but you're that guy too. Stop being a douchefawk.

I am surprised he hasn't had injury problems. The biggest problem with slow runners is the not the wasted time and effort but they're more prone to serious injuries because they don't have the body to run. If you have to get surgeries just to run 90 min half marathon is pathetic. I know runners who get injured often and are always seeing doctors. That is purely unhealthy.
