I am a competitive 5/10k runner who began to develop shin splints 3 weeks back. I had them a few times in high school and a few short outbursts that I simply ran right through in college, but that did not work this time. I slowly lost my ability to run normal mileage (60-70mpw) and since then I have:
-Taken time off (up to 4 days with no running at all)
-Iced twice a day
-Done calf/tib ant/hip strengthening exercises and stretches
-Massage/roll
-Seen a PT for graston
I tried to run yesterday and the shin (primarily my left) immediately hurt. It got slightly better as I warmed up and ran faster, but was unbearable on pavement after a few miles.
I'm frustrated because this is the kind of injury high school runners or beginner runners get, not experienced ones. I am coming back from a few months of sporadic training which I suspect instigated the issue, but now it feels like I am doing all I can do for the issue (rest, ice, stretch, roll, strengthen) and none of it seems to help at all. If anyone has had a similar experience and has suggestions for what I could do, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
