I've wondered about this before but reading the piece on Citius Mag on David Elliott got me thinking about it again. He says his first 5k in high school was around 21:57 (I havent tried to fact check but I see no reason not to believe him). It got me wondering about other runners who had humble beginnings in high school but have turned out to be good/great, whether at the HS, college, or pro level. As a HS coach I would love to be able to give more examples like Elliott to kids who might get discouraged early on. So I'm less interested in boys who ran 16:00 5ks or girls who ran 17:00 as freshmen and went on to win a world championship ( feel free to mention those if you want cuz that's still pretty crazy). For my purposes though, I'd be more interested in a guy like Elliot who went from 19/20:00 5ks to All-American, or a girl that started at a 6:30 mile and ended up winning state. I've done some research on my own but would love to hear stories that other people may know.
