I don’t get how this is even remotely achievable, I’m talking pack a day smokers running well under 3 hours for the marathon.
I smoked for 4 years, quit and took up running, I ran 50-60 mile weeks consistantly for 8 years and managed to get my 5k down to 17:45, however on a night out about while on holiday about year ago, stupidly I had some cigarettes but I loved the feeling so much I continued to smoke for tge rest of my holiday (because screw it, you only live once and it was my first holiday in 13 years) and I said I would quit after the holiday so I only smoked for 4 days plus I did a steady 50 minute runs around my resort in the morning so it’s not as though any fitness I might have lost while on holiday was due to detraining.
I hopped in a local 5k a few days after I returned from my holiday and iz sh*t you not, I struggled to break 20 and my lungs left absolutely awful (I had quit by this point) and it took me 3 months to get back into shape again and dip back under 18. This was off FOUR days of smoking maybe 7-8 cigarettes a day WHILST still sticking to my regular running routine.
I really love the feeling of smoking and although running is important to me, so is bloody enjoying myself and letting loose once in a while. I don’t drink often (maybe 3x ayear) but when I do, I probably won’t pass up the opportunity to have 3 or 4 cigarettes through the night to accompany it bit EVERY TIME I smoke even a minuscule amount, it impacts my running for weeks to come. Now, I could understand it if it was just a matter of days, like my lungs felt a bit rough for maybe the next couple of days but why do the negative effects seem to last much much longer with some people (aka me)? It’s not as though I have weak lungs or anything, I have had a spirometer test at the doctor’s office and was tested to have above average lung capacity so why on earth does smoking even one measily cigarette literally erase every ounce of recent aerobic fitness I’ve built within the last month or so?
I speak to other runners about this and some of them are avid smokers, much faster than I am and almost every runner I’ve spoken to, ex-smokers, occasional smokers, non-smokers and all .. they all say the same thing, having a few cigarettes on a night out should have next to no impact after the first couple of days as long as you quit the next day.
So why can’t I get away with it and others can?
