Dear Letsrun:
When beginning a base phase, is it generally better to get up to goal mileage quickly without workouts, or begin some easy workouts and progress to goal mileage over many weeks?
Example:
No workouts:
50 miles
70 miles
90 miles
100 miles
Commence workouts now
OR
Long run, tempo and hill sprints once a week, lifting and strides:
30 miles
40 miles
50 miles
60 miles
70 miles
80 miles
90 miles
100 miles
I guess the real questions is: does the increased mileage without any workouts have more value than lower mileage with more intensity?
