Gear = ~$200 for shoes, shorts and sleeveless shirt.
Everything else = $0
It’s not a cheap hobby.

I believe you. Most serious runners I know are anti-gear heads and pride themselves on not spending any money.
We’ve given the sport to the trophy wives.
$200 actually seems pretty good for hobby considering you’d spend way more on golf, tennis, backpacking etc. what would you consider ‘cheap’? Under $100?
At least $2,000.

$500 MRI
$350 Shoes
$200 Entry Fees
Wife

Shoes- 400
Shirts/shorts 100
Entry fees- 1000 or so
Air/hotel/car rental- 4000
Yep, I’m still slow, but having fun and beats nothing to stay in shape.
Skiing- $10k or more on lift tickets/air/hotel, etc.; an expensive hobby.
It don't really matter because it's what we do.
$2,200 ish
2nd year of collegiate running underway...
On a "books" athletic scholarship but bought a new garmin for $200 and maybe $100 worth of other stuff, so I'd estimate I'm coming out ~$1,700 ahead... this year. If you factor in all the spikes, trainers, clothes and other stuff from 8th grade (when I started running) to Senior year I think I'd only break even if I got bumped up to a full ride. The money is obviously not why I run lol
$15 on a senior discounted race. Bought on sale all the running gear that I'll need for the rest of my life 18 months ago in anticipation of retiring. Now I run for time on alternate weekends for free at a "parkrun".
Gym + gear+Fees = $25-2800
I need to cut back this year
Over 12k. Lots of travel to races.
Only spent $150 on shoes since I've run the whole year in one pair of Hoka Bondi
Up to 2,230 miles!!!!
Shoes $500
Gear $500
Misc $500
Travel $3,200
Medical $300
Registration $400
Fitness Centers (2) $1,100
Total: ~ $6,100
Nothing on shoes. I need a new pair soon though.
Costumes: Probably $100 or so
Entry Fees: Probably $300-400 (including NYCM)
Travel: To NYC it was ~$300, but I visited my dad, which I would have done at some point anyway, so maybe it's free?
Clothes: I probably spent about $200-250 on socks, shirts, shorts, a hat, and hand-held water bottles
Food: A lot. Maybe $30 extra per week, so $1500?
Beer: Probably $200 in running-related beer
Gym: $600 or so
Medical: I hit my head on something in December of 2017 while spectating a race and paid $800 in 2018, so I'm not sure which year that counts as.
Rent: I probably pay an extra few hundred dollars a month to live near a park with good running. I had some cheaper options in more urban parts of town.
All told, a few grand. Food and rent are the two biggest expenses.
On the other hand, if I weren't a runner I might go back to cycling, and that costs like $100/month (plus some dignity), so I'm probably doing alright.
Race entry fees: 363
Shoes: 356 (5 pairs, 400-500 miles/pair)
Gym: 322 (it's cold here)
Clothes: 60 (socks, running shorts)
Gels: 21
Gear: 10 (1 tube body glide)
Total Expenses: -1132
Income: +200 in prize money
Grand Total: 932
That's a lot. I'll run cheaper races in 2019 (HM instead of M, 10K instead of HM).
I gave way too much to Nike and I got nothing to show for except pathetic loser times.
