I’m used to running times 400s, 800s and mile trials because of soccer in my earlier days but I ran my first timed 5k earlier today and was disheartened in my time and I really want to pick this sport up and get better at it. I’m 23 years of age used to play a fair bit of sport in my earlier years (between the ages of 16-20) and I do stay active like bike to work for half an hour each way every day so I have decent base fitness. My speed is a million times better than my endurance, I can run a mile in 6:30 right now which isn’t exactly lightening fast.. but according to a lot of running calculators my 5k should be quite a bit faster with this mile time. I’m guessing I need to run a lot more, I’m better at anaerobic stuff but when it comes to exercising hard longer than 15 minutes it quickly gets very tough for me. I’d like to change this. I’m thinking of going on 45 minute runs daily (after work, at night) and was thinking of doing them between 8:30 - 10:00 min/mile pace and adding in a couple of jog-sprint-jog-sprint runs in. How long should it take me to break 20 minutes? (Which is pretty much the benchmark of what I consider to be fast, although I would be satifisfied with anything under 23 minutes within the next few months which is what I would consider to be good)
