In Athens, there were 5 men who had A standards out of 6 possible slots. Our lone woman had a B standard. Performance on the Int'l level has been pretty much on par w/ the 10000m and Marathon in OG & WC over the past 15 years, which isn't saying a whole lot for either area.
In LDR, it has been shown that if significant resourses ( = $$) are put into the top athletes and the next level, as well, result will be pretty good very soon. This happened with the RWers in San Diego too, as we got a Bronze in 99 at 50km from it and some other top performances too.
In the US, if, lets say, 15 states contested the RW in their HS programs (indoors and outdoors) and it was available just in D3, we would be able to literally dominate the world on every level.
Sadly, certain people in USATF and the USOC refuse to do anything to make this a reality, yet sit there dumbfounded as to why the event doesn't receive more acceptance and the participation & performance numbers aren't great. DUH!
