3:59?
3:59?
In fact, I'm sure most would run much slower than they might hope in this scenario. They would start out too quickly and blow up.
In that case, for me I would probably do my first 400 in about 53, next lap in 70, then fade to run some 90s or slower and run like 5:30.
I would surely die in the process.
The better question would be if you could make a mile before the bear caught you.
Um, you would not be able to run a mile, the bear would catch you with 50m and then you would be lunch.

Upon further research, it does appear that bears are pretty fast and running isn't the best way to get away.
Moninda Marube actually outran a bear in Maine. He "bearly" made it.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old in Alaska got mauled to death by a bear. Not a pretty sight.
The bear is faster....... wrote:

I thought this was interesting:
http://www.bearsmart.com/about-bears/dispelling-myths/".... a bear can outrun a racehorse over short distances but has little endurance."
A follow-up question is "How far can a bear run?" Nonetheless, safety-related articles have the same message: you can't outrun a bear.
If it's like my dream, I'll keep falling down every 100 meters or so.
“DNF” is the only possible honest answer to this question.
We had an encounter with a young brown bear in the arctic tundra once, a bunch of us shouted and waved our arms at it and it swerved away from us and legged it over open country to some foothills. I watched it for several minutes through binoculars. I'd be quite confident it had enough stamina to run down a human, it was going at a fair lick for over 5 mins.
I wouldn't run. I'd beat the sh*t out of it.

Gravy

Actually you might have a better shot at surviving. The experts all say whatever you do, don't run as apparently its like a bull seeing red. Raw speed for these things is like 25 mph or like 50 yds in 3 seconds.
For those w further interest see the bear scene in Revenant. Incredible and seemingly realistic, though most never live to tell about the experience
I don't have to outrun the bear...

I'm disappointed it took so long for this comment
You run to a big tree that you can go around faster back and forth till the bear gives up.
Yes, it works, I live in Michigan and did it up in the U.P., Seney. It was a black bear and it gave up.
The tree was big enough that I could see both the bear on both sides. I was taking a piss and left my rifle at the camp...timing is everything.
Regardless, the bear went back and forth and gave up after about 10 minutes as I stayed close to the tree. I went from oh crap to you can't get me.
That story is so fabricated. A cry for attention as he becomes irrelevant in running.
This is the same guy who lied about being human trafficked:
