I think this must be a weird question, since I couldn't find any previous threads about it and very little online in general.
I wondered if anyone has experience using salted black licorice as a means of sodium/carb replacement during long runs and/or races.
I tend to sweat an obscene amount and I believe I am a "salty" sweater. My skin is like a salt lick after I cool down from a long run, even on a cool day. I hate Nuun due to the fizziness and chemical flavor. I have resorted to eating table salt directly from a ziplock bag during long runs of 2 hours or more in order to try to prevent hyponatremia/swelling of the extremities.
I have always LOVED salted black licorice and I just had (what I thought was) a flash of genius regarding possibly using this as a more enjoyable way to replenish sodium during multi-hour runs. I realize I would still need to replenish K/Mg/Ca, so I would plan to take some gummies/gels to cover this aspect.
Just as I was preparing to rush out to ikea and stock up, I started to consider the other possible effects of eating black licorice, including an aldosterone-like effect, increased blood pressure and cortisol, and potassium loss - but I would assume these wouldn't come into play during a 4-6 hour run or race but would be more associated with chronic/longer-term use.
Has anyone here ever used this successfully as a strategy during longer runs or races?
