Soundproofing room with treadmill in it

Egg cartons. Many such cases.

We’re running a brothel upstairs. We won’t notice the noise.

I recently soundproofed an unfinished music room to prevent loud music from going up one floor, so I've done a lot of study on this. Egg cartons reduce echoes in a room somewhat, but do almost nothing to reduce sound transmission levels between rooms. Same with foam panels.

Really doing it right entails installing fiberglass insulation of at least 6 inches thickness, plus two layers of 5/8 sheetrock mounted on rails that are physically isolated from the ceiling joists. That gave me about 95% sound reduction. I doubt if you want to do all that.

Your first course of action should be to talk to the folks above you and find out what their schedule is for using that room. See if you can work with their schedule.

If not, try running hard on the tm while they are listening and see if the sound bothers them. Some treadmills can get pretty loud from rapid hard footfalls when you are running above 8mph or so.

The inexpensive soundproofing solution would be to fasten "soundproofing blankets" to the ceiling, probably 3 layers. It would look pretty ugly but only cost $200 or so, (depending on the size of the room) and would be kind of a pain to fasten to the ceiling. But that would give you some amount of noise reduction, a wild guess is 50%.

Might be ugly, but get some panel insulation and put it against your walls. they sell 4x8 sheets of it.

Are treadmills really that loud from above?

I have some experience with this. I have a bathroom next to our dining room, and wanted to soundproof the bathroom for obvious reasons. Like, when someone uses the toilet and is sitting 9 feet from people eating dinner, and the tile walls, echo..

so, I contacted a friend who is a contractor. He suggested concrete drywall with 8" thick insulation. It works great!

The bigger problem is gonna be the footfalls transfering through the treadmill into the building structure if it is a wood framed building. My neighbors bed often sounds like a treadmill on 11! Set it up on an old firm mattress or futon. Obviously it has to be stable.

Get some foam that drummers get to reduce sound.

What kind of flooring/walls/ceiling are in the treadmill room? My treadmill is in the basement on carpet and it's next to impossible to hear from above.

Fill entire room with spray foam. The fire retardent kind, don't be stupid.

even the interior walls you will want insulated with fiberglass insulation. did the drywall in a dentist office once.

Treadmill Runner had good advice for particulars. He did leave out one important consideration. Regardless of wall thickness, if there are air gaps, sound will travel through them. Caulking is your friend. Also seals around the doors are very important. This is a very tricky problem to solve.

It's really tough to soundproof without doing major construction. When it comes to sound prevention, mass is your friend. Think: concrete.

It's tough to add significant mass to a building after the fact. Your best bet would be to put it in the basement, if that's an option.

Speak to your neighbours about potential good/bad times to run. Proofing won’t be that effective, will cost money, need removing when you come to move etc.
