I am a 29yr old ex college soccer player who has caught the running bug. Lots of aerobic conditioning in my past, but no specific running training. I have ran a few casual 5k’s without training, with a PR of 20:15.
In October 2017, I jogged my first marathon in 3:58 off 25 mpw over 7 weeks of training. 12 miles was my max long run. (I know it was stupid to run a marathon being so underprepared).
Over the past 6 months, I have been more consistent with training, averaging 30 mpw and peaking at 40 mpw, with a 15 mile longest long run. Due to the hot, humid Midwest summer, most of my long runs were slow and absolute suffer-fests in 80% humidity at 85 degrees. I had little to no work at marathon goal pace (8:00). Also missed a week of training just 4 weeks out from the race due to an injury scare.
Result was a 3:32 marathon. I died hard in the last 3 miles and death marched with three 9+ min miles to close it out.
Realistically speaking, what is my potential if I can get up to 55-60mpw over the next few years? I appreciate any input and advice.
