Sydney Masciarelli: Best (non-KT) girl runner in the country

Very legit. Saw her run the same time on a tougher course in New Milford, CT. 2nd week of September. Looked like she was running an 800m race the entire time. Will be right in the mix at Footlocker.

Those are some good-lookin kids.

She seems to be one of those out-of-the-blue talents which pop up very few seasons during cross.

What does KT mean?

This girl is the real deal. I was at the race, Masciarelli was leading coming out of the back woods and at the bottom of the last downhill, about 600m to go. Starliper was right on her, essentially shoulder to shoulder but a few inches back. Connolly was a about 2 steps back. Everyone thought they were both going to fly right by her.

For Masciarelli to put 5 seconds on Starliper and 15 seconds on Connolly in about the last 400m is insane. Absolutely insane. I wish I could have seen her entire last 400m because she just completely dropped those other 2 girls. She probably could have run much faster if she still had that much energy left at the end.

Would not be surprised if she wins the National Championship. In fact, after today, she should probably be the favorite to win.

I really hope that she also goes to NXN. I am not sure that Tuohy is number 1 anymore.

I'm not saying that she is as good as "September" Tuohy, but Tuohy's performance has steadily been going down all season (...the decline only accelerated after her knee injury).

So there is probably an intersection here.

165 speed rating for Tuohy today (she was at 177 earlier in the season) to 161 today for this girl (with a monster kick)

No, Tuohy did not run at van Cortlandt this year, and the Manhattan Invitational there was only a 4k. Not sure Tuohy has ever run that 5k. The time you mention was at Sunken Meadow.

for whatever reason a lot of the girls at NXN NY ran slower than one would have expected......(Tuohy, Chmiel, Rauber...but not Walters). Kinda curious what was going on especially with Chmiel, who got beat by Walters in what she must have known would be a tight team race.

The only comparison I could find (and if anyone has a better comparison, please share) is by comparing Mary Hennelly from Suffern, NY. She seems to be the only athlete who has raced both Katelyn Tuohy and Sydney Masciarelli. Not a lot of results to draw from but this is the best I can do (plus it's raining outside and I'm done with tv for the day)

This girl comin out of nowhere means she’s gonna improve a lot. She’s not Katelyn level yet but she could probably go toe to toe with a not injured Claudia lane

Cain ran a 17:26 at a NYRR open race when she was in h.s.

Sydney is also like 5'10 with a much better frame for running than Mary Cain or Tuohy. Very long legs. Plus she plays basketball so she's very athletic. She can probably jump and touch the basketball rim.

More importantly, her coach is really conservative. Cain, Tuohy, Lane, their coaches hammered them and they will burn out big time (Cain already did).

Sydney might be the next great american distance runner.

Lol! Speculate much? How many high school girls do you know who can jump and touch the rim?!

How do you know her coach is conservative? Has her training been made public?

She's a really good HS runner, but we've seen this story before (with some variation), and the ending is often quite unpredictable.

Geez, either you are her coach or you are jumping to some big conclusions here:

Her coach is really conservative, how do you know how she trains? She went to race mayors cup, she obviously is looking for races. I do agree that Touhy coach is constantly looking to set records and is training her hard in order to achieve his goals. But, this kid, no idea. She did come out of nowhere, but maybe she ran a ton over the past year to come out of nowhere, time will tell.
