I actually tried practicing drinking with a cut-down drinking straw before my first marathon. The initial result was good - I was getting lots of water from the cup. Then on the next attempt, the straw had disappeared. It turned out to be too light to stay in my shorts pocket, so I decided that pulling out a straw was too complicated to pull off successfully 10-12 times in a marathon and went with the traditional pinch-sip method.
