What's your best time for the 3-mile run portion of the PFT?
What's the best time you've seen a fellow Marine run for the PFT?
While we're at it, what's your fastest CFT 880 yard time?

Ran a 16:50 initial PFT at boot camp, could have gone faster, but the drill instructor who was running with me lied and told me I wasn't allowed to pass him. I had run just under 15:56 for a 5k a few weeks prior.
Never tried to run faster than 17:30 in a PFT after that, just got my perfect score for breaking 18:00.
There was another competitive runner in my reserve unit, he usually ran mid 15's in our yearly PFT, I'm pretty sure he was a sub 15 5k dude.
Ran all 3mi, PFT between 18:30 to 19:45. I was fine with 1st class PFT. I always assumed it was a trap. I assumed rest of day would be difficult. I never saw the point of going all-out on PFT run. I saw some guys run about 16:30 give or take. CFT 880 yards? Must be something either before 1980 or after 1995. Never heard of CFT 880 yards.
The CFT (Combat Fitness Test) consists of an 880 yard run in boots and utes, five minute rest, 2 minutes of max ammo can lifts, 5 minutes rest, and a maneuver under fire course which consists of various crawls and buddy carries.
It was implemented in 2008. Although shorter, I find it a lot tougher than the PFT.
I was high PFTr in 1985 platoon 3085. All three PFT scores were 300.
I ran 11 miles every other day training for bootcamp.
In high school my heart was in wrestling, but I kept in shape by joining cross country for maybe 2 of the four years. I hated it, but wrestling gave me the endurance to run long distance.
After graduating high school I had a couple of months to stay in shape and would run from Ridgewood High School in Norridge, IL to Maine South in Park Ridge, IL and back totalling just over 11 miles. With each run I would absolutely have to beat my time before. I was obsessed and was no stranger to "runner's high."
When I ran my 1st PFT in 1st phase at MCRD San Diego, my run time was the best of all three. The 2nd phase run time was still under 18 min but not by much. I lost my shoe as someone stepped on the back of it. I had to wait until the crowd left, locate it, and put it back on. The worst was having to steer in between all of them in the forest to get to the front. The 1st Lt. dogged me out of me for having a worst time, but that's the Marine Corps.
The 3rd phase PFT was back on track but not quite as good as the 1st 3 mile run.
My 2 run times were mid 16s but again, the 2nd was barely under 18. Bootcamp slowed my run time down. My regiment was more grueling than theirs. Somebody should have told me to worry more about the head games than the physical aspect of bootcamp.
There were two other platoons with high PFTrs that graduated on stage like myself (along with the 3 honor men). Of course we each shared our results while on stage. I had the fastest 3 mile run of them all.
I am still proud to have achieved this. I still have the letter sent to my parents stating that I had a perfect 300 score and "Exemplified the highest standards of the Marine Corps." None of this will even buy me a cup of coffee. However, it did give me a lasting memory.
Correction, My 1st phase pft test score was the best of all three.
I wan a 10:12 two mile during an Army physical fitness or APFT while at West Point in combat boots
I went sub 18 but not by much in boots at TBS in 1992. Never maxed the run again.
My best 3 mile PFT run was 18:12. Don’t remember what the worst was but it was definitely the one that was about 4 weeks before I went on terminal leave. ;) but it was probably around 18:35 or so.
All of training back then was to run when I was told to and going to the dancehall to chase women and 2-step every chance I got. When I was at 8th & I we were often given “personal PT” and I would usually run when given that option.
This was in the early-mid 80’s and there was no 880 so I can’t speak to that. I’m quite sure that if I trained at that time the way I do now in my mid-50’s I’d have easily been under 18 for 3 miles.
13:45, which I believe was short. Otherwise, 14:28. In seven years in the Marines, I was never over 18. However, I really was quite outclassed at USNA from 1983 to 1987, where I never came close to even being in the same zip code as Ronnie Harris, John Lezniak, Louis Poor and Guy Jackson. Alot of the Marine PFT courses were short.
Platoon 3082 -1981 Indeed I prepared for boot camp, to begin, I had braces on my legs because of bone popping out from my knees back in high school 9th 10th grade I was in a lot of pain, I started recuperating by the 12 grade I graduated in 1979 worked for a yr or two decided to join the corps but months before joining I was exercising like a fool , my body was loving it, jogging for many miles, running up the school bleachers and down, around the track for a few more miles, pushups , sit ups, finally joined the core, PFT time, I aced the track with 17.30 sit ups no problem , came to my pull ups, came up short, I did them straight up and down, when the rules permitted you to swing if necessary. so no perfect score, but I tried later in regular service, got my 300 score for the next three yrs, just didn't taste the same. oh well, life goes on. we will remember boot camp as a important part of our life, at least for me. Thanks for sharing. Semper Fi.
Stupid zombie thread. I was thinking “Dang, somebody had the exact same experience and times as me!” Turns out I was just reading my own old post.
I had a guy tell me two days ago one of his buddies did a 3 mile in 14 minutes. Said the guys last name was Kincaid and I was like oh that’s funny, there’s a fast runner named Kincaid, and he said I would know him for wrestling not running.
Anyway, dude telling me the story got kicked out of the corps for smoking pot.
I ran it with the Marines when I was in Navy Electronics C School because I had Marine instructors.
I did the Navy PFT, and about a week later did the Marine PFT, scoring 300 points on both. It was a joint base with all branches of the service. The Marine warrant officer CO gave me a special aword in front at an all hands outdoor formation. I was 31 years old at the time.
Can't remember my time on the Marine PFT. But my fastest time on the Navy PFT was 7:41 at age 42 on an out and back course at Little Creek, VA. I hit the turnaround in 3:28, jogged for about 100 yards and then picked it up again.

17;10 with boots in boot camp MCRD San Diego.
When I was stationed at Kaneho Bay Hawaii in 1976 I came in from a 11 mile run at lunch time. Battery 1stSgt tells me The Secretary of the Navy is on base and we have to do a PFT for him at 1500 hours. I ate an apple, drank some water and took a nap. At 1500 hours I scored a 300 PFT, 20 pull up , 90 sit ups (in 80 seconds) and ran 15:11 for my 3 miler taking first. I will admit that I don’t know how accurate that course was.
I took a photo with the Secretary of the Navy and received a Secretary of the Navy tie bar for my effort.
All my other PFT 3 milers were around 17:30 just fast enough to get my perfect score.
Almost forgot. We had to wear our utility cover and mine was starched. I made sure it flew off on the first turn around the motor pool.
I took the long-standing record fastest PFT M.C.R.D SD from"SSGT Lambert" with him right behind me trying to truly catch me(His Honest help in taking His Record!) Awarded two meritorious promotions(Was also Scribe)
Honestly, I don't know if or when my record fell. Sincerely lcp S.P.G 3037 L of 1997/1998 M.C.R.D
My best was 9:32 at 18 at emerald valley farm. -a random marine
