5:00 girls = 4:10, 4:15? boys
5:00 girls = 4:10, 4:15? boys
There is an 'accurate' table of M-F conversions somewhere in all track events.
Women's 1,500 WR = 3:51
Men's 1,500 WR = 3:26
(25 second spread)
I think the women's mile WR is 4:12 and the men's mile WR is 3:43 (29 second spread).
Based on that ratio a 5:00 girls mile/1600 might be in the 4:25 range give or take a couple of ticks for boys.
I find girls usually over-estimate their conversion to guys times. I remember in highschool I ran a 1:54 800m to come 3rd at a championship race. All the girls on my team were convinced that a 2:20 for a girl was better than a 1:54 for a guy. It still pisses me off to this day.
Why not use the high school records as a basis for comparison. The boys record for the mile (not 1600) is 3:53 and change and the girls is about 4:38. So that would be a 45 second conversion for boys to girls and would put a 5:00 down to 4:15.

You're obviously a girl. 3:53 for a guy is far superior to 4:38 for a girl.
The numbers obviously change as the times get slower. For example I have found over the last 30 years of coaching both males and females that a 12:00 3200 for girls is fairly equivelant to a 10:00 for boys. I have also noticed that Males are far more concerned with comparisons than females. I think that it stems from the fact that most guys think that it is far easier to be a successful female than male. For those that believe that, YOU ARE WRONG. Girls tend to be far more mature at the high school age and realize that the comparisons are meaningless.

I would say that the 12 to 10 minute thing is wrong. I used to think 1 min per mile until I got to college and realized wow a 15 flat 5ker is definitely better than an 18 flat 5ker, etc etc. I would say I usually use the 45 second rule of thumb to make conversions easy, but if you really wanted more exact conversions you would have to use percentages.
10:30-9:00
I agree with 54 year old guy 12:00 to 10:00 seems about right in my 20 years of coaching HS boys and girls
Did not say they were equivelent. No more than 3:43 and 4:12 are equivelent. They are not. Both the men's mile reacord and high school boys record are superior. I just posed the question to at least use comparitive marks for similar ages.

What does 'equivalent' mean? Getting the same place at state? Being ranked the same nationally? Morally the same?

Agreed. What's the point of asking what's 'equivalent'? Male distance runners have got to be the most insecure people on the planet.
I maybe should clarify. Although I believe that 12 min to 10min is fair for a HS comparison. The numbers change as the performance increases or decreases. Obviously a 11 min girl is not as good as a 9 min boy (check the national listings). However a 13 min girl is better than an 11 min boy. I think that 10 and 12 is about where it becomes equal.

Isn't it true that it is far easier for girls to be more successful than boys? In most places, many more boys participate than girls. Competition at nearly every level in hs is much deeper for guys. And at the college level, there are many more scholarships available to girls, many more places on teams for girls, many more opportunities for coaches to get less-qualified girls accepted into college or get them off the waiting list.
I suppose youre right, the comparisons are meaningless since it is so much easier to be successful if one is female. In fact, for some guys this comparison would make them bitter.
To the poster who said that girls on his team claimed that 1:54 was equivilent to 2:20: I think this perception is pretty much the norm. They do stand on the same podium, and as far as their value to colleges, the 2:20 girl may get more money.
I'd give it a factor of about 1.16.
boys girls
3:50 4:27
4:00 4:38
4:10 4:50
4:20 5:02
4:30 5:13
Some of what you say is true and some is not. There are way more opportunities for females at the college level. I however have never sent a "lesser" athlete to a college program. I wish their were more opportunities for males but I have never had a deserving male not receive some financial help. I do however feel that no male that hasn't broken 9:30 or 4:25 should think about any financial help. The problem stems when a 9:45 guy wants to think that he is more than he is and then tries to compare himself to a female (silly, and a waste of time).
Use this.. it is the most accurate out there:
except the men's steeple conversion.. bullshit - ask milne
4:30 MALE = 5:17 Female?
And neither of those athletes should be thinking about continuing to run in college.
Why not go by Dyestat's standards for their elite listings? I think they're pretty accurate:

That sounds about right actually. And a 5:00 junior girl is worth a 4:18 junior guy. 54 year old MALE was dead on when he said 12 flat for girls was worth 10 for guys (well its worth 9:58). Would explain why I felt so mediocre as a ten-minute two miler.
